I have been reading books on stress management. In the book Stress Management for Dummies, there is discussion about thinking before you buy. Asking yourself a few questions including: is this worth the time I had to work to pay for this? So when I have been out shopping today I have asked myself these questions. It really makes you think!

That's really a great idea. I realized when I was laid off a couple years ago how much I used 'stuff' to make myself feel better. Problem was paying for that stuff was adding more stress to my life so was it worth it? No.
I agree, it's a great way to make you think about your spending. I also like working out the cost per wear - so a great pair of jeans is worth it if you'll wear them every day. But something you'll on wear a few times can end up at like $100 per wear - usually not worth it. Wedding dress is the main exception to this rule though :)
I tried to teach my kids this concept, especially when they were going through the "gimme" adolescent period.
Since they all worked minimum-wage jobs, I think it was eye-opening to them. After they thought about it, they often didn't want that pair of shoes they "had" to have.
