Day 150 (September 5th)--It's all Greek to me!

Today our whole team went out to lunch in Celebration of a co-workers passing his LICSW (the highest licensure for a Social Worker). I had never been to a Greek Restaurant and today we went to a Greek Buffet. That food is very filling! I mentioned in a previous post that I had tried Baklava and did not like it; if I had had it at this place maybe I don't think would have said that. There was this dish called Grape leaves I could have done without but the rest was delicious! I just loved the dishes they had! It was also $8.00 for the buffet which included a beverage! Pretty good deal....

Day 149 (September 4)--Are you ready for some football?

I am excited that it is Fall....one of my favorite parts of fall is the kickoff to football season. This year there are two things that are different---one is that I am rooting for both the Packers and Jets this season (which you already know) and the other is this is the first season I am playing fantasy football. I am playing with a Fantasy group through Yahoo sports. I am not playing for any money but just to see how well I can do with picking teams this week. The stupid Giants had to go and win which messed up one of my pics, but hopefully I can still come out somewhere in the middle anyway. We shall see....

Day 148 (September 3rd)---A Role of Importance

Today was a busy day for me. Work, a meeting with a client over lunch at BK, a taste test and training part 2........I have worked as an election judge in the elections since 2002. But this is the first time I am serving as head election judge. A big part of my role is to assist in training in new election judges as well as ensure that my polling place is run efficently and the result are modemed over at the end of the night. Due to the fact that this will be such a huge election in terms of numbers and with how this could really change things for us as a Nation, I am very excited to be a part of the election process. Also since we moved to a new city last year, I am working in a whole new polling place with people I have not met before. I am anticipating the Primary to be a bit slower but the General Election to be a VERY LATE night. I took that whole week off of work for a mini vacation...it will be interesting to see how late that one runs. (Back in the 04 elections our polling place had the results in and reported by 11PM...I think there's a fat chance of it this time.)

Day 147 (Sept 2nd) Smorgasboard of new things.

Here are my new things in a nutshell.

--I wheeled and dealed......I love to go on Ebay and get good deals. I got 2 GREAT deals today. The first was the Clinique 2 Step Skin Care line (never used) for 8.50 with shipping. The second was the Avon Mineral Foundation, Blush and Eyeshadow for 8.15 including shipping (mineral foundation at places like Target is 8.00 for the foundation alone.)

-I read about lots of Secrets: During my new things run I have sent a secret to PostSecret.com today I got one of the Post Secret books from the library. While some secrets I could rather not hear, a lot of them are either secrets that make me smile or secrets I can relate to.

-Giving into my curiosity....I watched the new 90210 (mostly because Shannon Doherty and Jenni Garth came back in their old roles). While I do not think it holds a candle to the old 90210....it wasn't terrible. I did like the fact that they appropriately aged Kelly's (Jenni Garth's) sister from the show so there is a link there and they cast a strong actress to play Erin Silver. I am not 100% sold on the show but I do like the fact they made ties to the old show and have somewhat of a story line. We'll see.

-Jackie

Day 146--Sept 1st--Taking it all in on the Balcony

Today was a pretty simple day. To be honest, I will be glad to get back to work after spending the weekend recuperating from many ailments (food poisoning, sprained fingers). Today I decided to take it easy and I ate my first two meals of the day on the balcony while reading the newest issue of TV guide magazine (also a new thing for me. Never bought the magazine before.) I was originally planning on eating all of my meals out there but it ended up being a very humid day. My puppy and I enjoyed out time out there! (He actually enjoyed his begging also.) =)

-Jackie

Day 145 (August 31st)---Tossing the Pigskin

I wanted to write about another new thing I encountered today but I did not end well....Que Sera Sera.

Instead I will talk about the OTHER new thing I did today. I got this really cool Wilson Football last year in the Pepsi Pick Your Call Sweepstakes. Today my husband, puppy and I all got to try tossing the pigskin. Besides a sprained middle finger I sustained during a particular toss, it was a lot of fun and something we want to do on a regular basis.

Day 144 (August 30th) A whole lotta nothin'

Last night I became sick again from the food poisoning. I had had soup during the afternoon then tried to eat a sandwich later in the night.....my stomach was not ready for it.

With that said I had to take my PRN of Trazodone to get to sleep and this morning I still felt under the weather so I slept in until noon. Seriously, even on the wknd I normally do not sleep past 7:30 or 8Am and then I am usually out and about running errands or doing fun things. Not today. I did not get out of bed until noon. I did get up about 8:30 but then finished my book and dozed in and out of sleep. (Not because of the book). I got up and showered about noon and the most I did was some laundry and picked up some magazines to read at the corner store. I felt like a bum but I know that in order to get back to 100% I needed to take care of myself. I am hoping to be up to more productive activities tomorrow though....

EPILOGUE: We ended up losing power on the whole block from 10pm-12am. My hubby was in the shower when everything went pitch black. A lot of people began assembling on their decks. It was kind of fun.....I KNEW there was a reason I did not go and get groceries this day!

-Jackie

Day 143 (August 29th)---This is newsworthy?

My husband actually inspired today's new thing. At the grocery store (where I was picking up soda crackers to ease my still ailing tummy) we came across this cover of people magazine. We were both appalled that this was on the Cover. We both feel that there is a lot more news to cover in the world than how Jessica Simpson found love again (after she walked away from love with her first husband Nick Lachey not to mention I think her Country song is terrible). I was so appalled I went home and submitted a letter to the editor (see below).
To Whom it may concern,
I came across your latest issue of People at the grocery store and have to say I was highly disappointed in the cover story. With all the things that are going on in the world (an economic recession, the end of a very amazing Olympic games and the brink of an election that could change the face of America) the cover story is Jessica Simpson's finding love again? If memory serves me correctly she is the one who walked away from her marriage with Nick Lachey. Also what makes her so different from the millions of Americans who have suffered heartbreak and had to rebuild their self image in hopes of finding loves again?

-Jackie
Minneapolis, MN
I do not know if this letter will be printed or any attention will be paid to it. But it made me feel better just having my say about it all.

Day 142--(August 29th)---Poison!

Food Poisoning that is. Today's new thing was supposed to be volunteering at an Inner City Ministy helping to get backpacks ready for inner city families who could not afford school supplies. Today's new thing ended up being Food Poisioning. Yesterday morning I boiled some eggs to put in my (inulated) lunch bag to bring to work. This is a regular thing for me. I ended up forgetting them in the fridge. I got home and decided to eat them then and there. I don't think that they had been cooked all the way. Last night I began to feel queasy made a lot of trips to the bathroom (enough said). I went to bed and the cramping and other symptoms got worse through the night. At 7Am I ended up calling my boss. She was out of work with food poisoning about a month or so ago so she understood (Oysters did it for her.) She was really sweet about it, told me to call her if I needed anything and made sure there weren't any appointments I needed to reschedule. The volunteer coordinator was nice too. It's just a bummer as I would have rather been working then volunteering vs getting over this nasty episode. At at about 11Am I began to feel a bit better but I am still nowhere near 100%. I also think I may have an aversion from boiled eggs for a few days....

-Jackie

Day 141--(August 27th) The results are in!

Note from Jackie: There is an epilogue for day 139. I updated that post below. If you have a chance, go check that out. Thanks!

A couple of weeks ago I was at my parents house for a family gathering. My Mom is a big Clinique person and gets all the wonderful items during their bonus days! Since she has such a big stockpile I was able to take home a trial sized clinique 7 day scrub. I wanted to see if it would make my skin look "refreshed" and wonderful.

Well, on day 7 I can tell you......................I have good things and bad things to say about this product. It did make a blemish on my nose dissapear fast and my skin has felt healthier....but I still ended up with a nasty blemish on my chin today. Would I shell out the money to put more of this? I am not sure. Guess I have to think about that one!

-Jackie

Day 140 (August 26th)--I now pronounce you.....

Today I did something I have heard about but never tried. I became ordained to perform weddings and did so online! I went here and became ordained for free....sort of. I got a generic credential paper e-mailed to me but if I want an official certificate or supplies to perform their weddings I can purchase them for $130.00. If I want a laminated card with my ordination information on that I can get that for $11.00. There's always a catch....

-Jackie

Day 139 (August 25th)---If you plan it, they will come!

This new thing is actually a continuation of yesterday. I received an e-mail from the leader of the Women's community group asking for assistants to help plan events. Even though I have only been to one event this was something I really wanted to do. I e-mailed her back and told her I would be interested in helping out. With that said she signed me right up. Therefore, my new thing for the day is becoming assistant organizer of a group where I have only attended one event. I planned my first event too for October. Yep, we will be playing some Paintball. It will be a combination of 2 of my favorite things---Wisconsin (that is where the course is) and fall weather! Looks like others are interested too: in one day I have already had 8 people sign up!
Epilogue: I have had so much interest in this event; not only do I already have 14 people signed up BUT there was so much "popular demand" that I ended up scheduling a second paintball event in November! I am very excited about this!
-Jackie

Day 138--August 24th--Potluck with Strangers

As you get older it is safe to say it is harder to meet new people. I have found myself in a rut as a lot of the women in their mid 20's around here want to go out and shop or go out to the clubs. Being married for 6 and a half years, neither of these things are my scene anymore. On the flip side, many times I end up in a group of Mom's of young children (who are focused on playdates and potty training) which leaves me out of the loop because I am not a mommy. =(

Today I attended a potluck with a group of women who get together to try new things. I went to a potluck with a few of them at Minnehaha Falls. It was a wonderful time and the women were great. One of them works in a job I used to be in so we had a lot to talk about. It was really refreshing to be around this group of women. I found them through http://meetup.com/ which has meetups in each state (and I think now internationally). There are a wide range of groups to choose from. I am looking forward to my next meetup with the women. It was also nice to go to the Falls again. It was a nice day to sit in the sin and just take it all in. The above is from 2 years ago but will give you a shot of the beauty of the falls (that is my hubby and I from back in 06 when we rode bike with friends to the falls).

-Jackie

Day 137 (August 23rd)--Is it all it is cracked up to be?

This morning I was doing my laundry and wondered to myself--"is this Supercycle for an extra 25 cents all it's cracked up to be?" (Those of you who have done laundry in Laundry rooms of apartments and at Laundromats will understand.) With that question in my mind I proceeded to do a comparison. My whites were in the regular cycle and the Colors got the super wash. The verdict? My husband and I both noticed that the towels were fluffier but that's about it. Don't think I will be doing the super wash too often...unless maybe it is a cold winters day and I just want to bury my face in a warm towel just out of the dryer!

-Jackie

Day 136 (August 22nd) Personal (reading) shopper

I love to read! I just finished up my last batch of library books and returned them to the library. While I was online looking at my (library) account, I found a feature that allows you to submit the book categories you are interested in and the library will give you a list of suggestions based on those answers. So I had the library pick out my next batch of books. I put 5 of them on my reserve list and should be picking those up today or tomorrow. I will let you know if they are good or not!

(As for the image this was my reading a book first thing in the morning.)

Day 135 (August 21st) This one came early!

The best laid plans of man....(you know what I'm saying)....

I guess I have 2 new things for the day......

and it's not even 7Am yet!

SO far today has been pretty rough on me. Last night at Culvers I put my check card in the pocket of my jeans and never put it back in my purse. So when I get to the gas station this morning I have no check card. Had to put it on my credit card. :( At the gas station I got a Orange Dreamsicle Doughnut. It was good but I think they could tone down the sweetness a tad.

SO I was in a fog this morning (brain fog) and I get on the wrong highway to get to work....no big deal. I can take the back roads right? WRONG! I went the wrong way on the back roads and ended up in a city I had no need to be in! So I left early for work and got to work late after getting completely lost and taking the wrong freeway to work. I still was the first one here (I am the earlybird of the bunch) and still got my report that was due in one time but it was just a frustrating way to start off the day. I just hope the day gets better as is goes along! =)

Day 134- (August 20th) A little bit of this, a little bit of that...

My husband and I had dinner at Culvers tonight to get out of the apartment for awhile. He ordered a Mushroom burget basket and I had the chicken basket (it was okay, not the best chicken I have ever ordered but not the worst either.) My husband was wanting some of the chicken after he saw I had it so we cut our meals in half so we could have two meals in one. Believe it or not, we have never done that before (in our 6 and a half years of marriage and our eight years of being together).

Culvers prints out their Custard Flavor of the Day a month in advance. I got a list of the flavors for September so I can try one out....or maybe two.....

-Jackie

Day 133- (August 19th)--A dramatic mockery

AH, the Drama! Make it stop!

I did a few new things today but what I have learned is: sometimes the random new things are the more interesting ones. There was nothing on TV tonight. The Olympic events I want to see are not on until tomorrow and the other shows left much to be desired. With that said, my husband and I decided to find a show to make a mockery of. We found Big Brother 10 and I ended up doing my dramatic interpretations of the annoying and overly dramatic show. From people whispering their plans of who should stay on the eviction block to "showmances", to the overly pained person winning the power of veto then wondering who to stay true to after a contestant called him a "Judas" the week before.
I ended up not only doing dramatic interpretations, but also would break into song when I would hear the magic catch phrases (e.g. Should I stay or should I go? and of course La Cucaracha during veto challenge involving cockroaches.) I also began throwing movie quotes into the mix (what are you going to do today? Whatever I feel like doing, Gosh! I want the Truth! You can't handle the truth) I don't have any video of this, sorry. I will tell you this much though; those acting courses I took in college really have paid off, LOL! Maybe I should go on the show......half of those people go on to further their acting careers. (I am totally kidding about going on the show, but not kidding about these people going on in hopes of becoming the next Brad Pitt or Lindsay Lohan). Until next time!

-Jackie

Day 132 (August 18th)---Letting my baby out into the world!

My husband and I live in an apartment complex that is full of kids. When we let our dog out we are the ones taking him out on the leash. We are...up until today. Over the time we have lived here he has grown accostomed to being around kids (he still has a problem with those who run up to him and scream who what dog wouldn't?) so today we let one of the neighbor girls take him out for a romp around the complex. This is a rareity for me because our dog is 40 pounds and we are both very protective of him (the girl taking him out is also only 8 years old). But today I let him take a step towards doggie independance by going out with her. (I will say I am occasionally peeking outside to make sure he is doing well, so far so good.) ;)

Day 131---Better than what???

My new thing today had to do with cooking. I like to cook--but with a busy work schedule I usually do not get the time to do much of it. So today I made up a tuna casserole (and almost forgot to put the tuna in it) and I also made.....which is my new thing for the day.....Better than Sex cake. My family liked to make this a lot but I had never personally tried. Last night I found a recipe online and tried it out. The store was out of Heath bars (why? you got me!) so I put cut up snicker bars on the top instead. I have not had it yet but I am hoping it will be a nice treat!

Day 130---(August 16th)....So I am officially a sports fan!

Back in 2006....I started developing a passion for football...Packer football that is. Then this year I started developing an interest in Nascar (my favorites being Kasey Kahne, Earnhardt Junior and Brian Vickers.) Now I am glued to the tube to watch the Olympics (Phelps and the US Women's Gymnastics team, as well as the Beach Volleyball duo of May/Walsh in particular.

So today that popped into my mind when I was waiting for my oil change to get completed and was excited to see a Sports Magazine with articles about Phelps and Brett Favre. =) So I decided to do something I thought I would never do....

I signed up for a one year subscription to Sports Illustrated! One of the biggest selling points was the free NFL team Jacket (which I chose to be from the Jets. I am a big Packers and Jets fan but do not have any Jets apparel). Also I won't get harassed some (not all but there are quite a few) arrogant Vikings fans in these parts. Either way, I will enjoy catching up with my sports each week and making 4 easy payments......

Day 129 (August 15th)--A Random Decision

Next month marks six months at my job. I have not had a vacation lasting more than a 4 day wknd since September of last year. With that said, I decided to take the whole first week of November off. Counting the wknd days that surround it I will be away from work for 9 days! My boss already approved it. But besides working at the Election in November...I have no plans. But I will be making some. I figure early November should have some good deals. Maybe I'll do a spa package....or make an excursion up North. Who knows? All I know is it will be a much needed break. I'll just make sure I am on top of my clients needs so there are no large fires with my clients while I am gone.

Take Care,
Jackie

Day 128 (August 14th)--Signed, sealed, delivered!

Today my new thing came when I was least expecting it. I was at work waiting to find out what the next steps would be to get extra funding for client services. The process normally is; put in an exceed request, wait for a call or e-mail from the exceeds head to "justify why the client needs this." From the point it either gets approved or it goes to a committee where you go and defend why you think the client needs the funding; then you get a yes or no answer. I ended up elminating a lot of those steps; I submitted my paperwork and it was approved right away! This is huge for me because the service I was getting funded for often times ends up in committee! Made me feel like I had a GOLD Medal day!

-Jackie

Day 127 (August 13th) PIZZA PIZZA! (with a special report from my husband)

Today was one of those days for me where I just could not seem to get out of the dumps! Might have been because it is right before payday and we all know how that feels. =) Today I had the day off from work but could like of nothing new to do. So I walked to the store to pick up ingredients for my onion burgers. While I was there I kept seeing people walk out of the deli area with big pieces of pizza. When I got there there was a sign saying Free Pizza Compliments of the Deli. Don't get me wrong, I have had free pizza before at events and work and of course the small free sample slices but have never had HUGE pieces for free at the grocery store. Thus, my new thing for the day is free Deli pizza....and it was DELICIOUS...comparable to a pizza delivery place!
***My hubby wants to share that he also tried a new thing. He had an onion burger topped with an omlette??!!! Don't ask me. He said it was "and interesting taste combination." I will keep my opinions to myself on that one....
-Jackie =)

Day 126 (August 12th) Get your Chi on!

Today was sort of a new things double header. First I tried Tai Chi via a DVD instructional tape. It was a little tricky but I did find the movements to be relaxing. I will probably do this tape again and if I can get the hang of it, make it a part of an exercise routine!

I also went online to every radio station I listened to and entered my name in their online contests. I put in a variety of entries from a pack of steaks to Rascal Flatts tickets to a Vegas getaway. It would be nice if I could win big in at least one of them. We shall see.....

-Jackie

Day 125 (August 11th) Just Say NO!

Today I had a training at the main office on motivational interviewing. The main office is a big point of temptation for me because there is a mini cooler full of pop (or sodas for those of you not living in the midwest).....not just any pop....but my old vices of Mountain Dew, Sunkist and Coca-C0la and they are FREE! Back in the day I could have downed at least 2 cans during a training session; 3 if it were an all day one. :p But I had to hold my own and just said no...ended up sipping on a 7 up the whole time. I could have gone the V-8 route because they have some of those, but I did not feel emotionally ready for that.

-Jackie

Day 124 (August 10th)--The Agony of De Feet!

Hello ;)
(DISCLAMIER--for those of you who know I have been kicking the caffeine habit, that is my hubby's bottle of Coca-Cola on the table. He was sitting next to me on the couch. Thought I would clear that up right away.)

So today I had a specific new thing in mind but due to some pain I am having in the back of one of my calf's, I decided to postpone it (since I am still planning on doing it I am not going to reveal what it is.)

Instead I focused on my feet and calves. I decided to put on twist on Jen'sI original idea and used icy hot on the spot on the back of my calf then applied a shea butter calming mask on my legs and feet. So I used the mask on my legs and feet then wrapped them up in plastic wrap. I wanted to see if my legs would have the smooth and calming effects the mask is supposed to bring. So I propped my legs up and waited for about 15 minutes (for those of you who are wondering, that is the first series of the Fame TV show that is on. Yes I like old school things.) The plastic wrap made my legs itchy but other than that there were some results. My legs felt a tad bit smoother and the calf area was a little less painful, but that could also be from the icy hot I applied in that area. Who knows? Either way I do not think I will make this a regular part of my beauty regimen.

-Jackie

(Day 123) Wii Olympics!

In keeping with the Olympic Spirit, "A" had Mike and I back over to watch more Olympics. But during the really slow times of news and commentary, I finally got a chance to play on the Wii. We played Wii Olympics; swimming, fencing, gymnastics and fencing. My arms were very sore by the end of the swimming leg. What do I think of the Wii? The Jury is still out on that one. I liked it but then I got frustrated with it's difficulty. That is my hubby in the Green Shirt!
I will tell you this: we made sure to tune in for Michael Phelps to win the Gold! =) Go Phelps! I hope he can win all 8!

-Jackie

Day 122 (August 8th) Ring it in

One of the things I have been wanting to do to ring in the Olmypics is have an Olympic viewing party. My friend "A" called Mike and I over to watch the Olympics on his big screen projector. It was a lot like watching the Olympics in the movie theatre. It was great to watch the opening ceremonies on the Big screen. Even my hubby Mike, who is not really into the opening and closing ceremonies, was awed by the show China put on in those opening ceremonies.
On the right is "A"'s dog warning. He is taking in the festivities.

Double Agent (August 7th, Day 121)

Hello,
Well my new thing came early this morning when I found out Brett Favre had been traded to the NY Jets. I said if he was traded to any team besides the Vikings I would root for them on that team also. Well, now that he is a Jet I am rooting for both and NFC and an AFC team. That's right, today's new thing is that I am now a Packers fan AND a Jets fan. But mark my words, I will NEVER be a MN Vikings fan!

(August 6th)---Hot Dog Day!

Hello,
I will let you know up front---I am going to try and keep the new things about food to no more than 1-2 things a week. However today I could not resist! I was starting to feel hungry around 9Am and wanted to have something that I normally would not eat at this hour....so I had a Polish Sausage with the works! (Tomatoes, onions, olives..). Here is MN we don't normally have hot dogs or sausages with more than the basics but today was my day....and it was DELICIOUS! I need to make these (brats, hot dogs, Sausages) with the works more often!

Day 119--Sample Anyone?

Today's new thing is short and sweet but also very Random. I went to SuperTarget today to get my lunch after having client visits all morning. As I was picking up my lunch I notice the number of free samples that were out. So I tried every single free sample that was available as I picked up my lunch and headed to the checkout!

More Tomorrow,
Jackie

In the First Half.....

Hey Everyone,

In the future I am hoping to make these updates daily or every other day, but for now I have some catching up to do! On my protected site I would update weekly it makes for long entries. But to keep you up to date here is my new things recap.

Day 114--This was our summer games at work. I did a few new things 1) Had a chair massage vs the lying down ones...I like the chair massages better ;) 2) I had my palm read.....while I am not really into that it was interested to see what she had to say 3) It was the first time 8 of us were jammed together in a photobooth.

Day 115(August 1st) --Can you say Pajama Day? (See photo second on left)--I wore my Pajamas out to the Grocery Store, out to eat and while we were outside talking to our neighbors!

Day 116--See 1st picture on left---I went to a Friend's Family reunion. It was an interesting experience with Yummy food! The first picture on the left is the kiddie pools they used to hold items! Cool idea.
Day 117-I found out an co-worker from the Job I had back in college was now the supervisor. This woman worked long hours and worked hard...she waited 5 years to get a promotion from Night staff to say staff....if my calculations are right, she's been there 14 years. I haven't talked to her since 2000 when I left there but I sent her out a card congratulating her on her position!
Day 118--(August 4th)--I had some time to kill between my 2 clients. Since I had paperwork to do and Barnes and Noble was open, I did it all from a nice comfy chair inside Barnes and Noble. I love going ther when I just want to relax and catch up on magazines, but I had never gone in there to do paperwork before.
So there you have it. I am hoping to figure out how to work this photo thing so my pictures are not all bunched up. The updates will also be more frequent. Have a great day and feel free to comment...to avoid solicitors and inappropriate comments, I will be approving all comments prior to them being posted.

I stayed for about 30 minutes then drove home. I did like the Cowboy art exhibit the the rest of it was just not for me. At least it only cost me .75 for parking and the admission was free !

I hope this gives you an idea of the things I have done so far! Future updates will include photos as I can fit them in! I look forward to sharing with a broader audience and will also be linking to other thing-a-day sites so you can have a look at those too!
